UNORTHODOX DRAWING SERIES, 2002
This series began as a mentally freeing exercise. I wanted to do a series that was motivated by the subconscious and to not have a clear idea of what I was trying to accomplish iconographically. In my other work, I conceptually think through a series before beginning or think specifically about what physical attributes can convey conceptual ideas during the process, so that I feel a sense of control from beginning to end. I had been looking at alot of outsider and folk art when I started this series and was amazed by the freshness and the peculiar senses of combining, the randomness that made sense, and a general sense of freedom in those works. I wanted to try to emulate something along those lines, trying to be as non-linear thinking as I could be and to just make images that weren't easily decipherable for me on a 1 + 1= 2 level. So, I guess my commentary on these drawings is that I'm not sure what they are about other than smatterings of ideas, perhaps things that I am not brave enough to deal with in other works.
