The Meek Drawing Series, 2003
This series of collage/drawings began with a concept concerning the Bible verses:
Psalm 37 verse11 "But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace." and Matthew 5 verse 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."
This series of drawings starts with the premise that perhaps those verses aren't intended to be interpreted in the usual homo sapiencentric perspective. Perhaps the meek are not the meek amongst us humans, but instead the meek among all the living, the small microbes, bacterium, protozoa, and viruses.
For, who is more likely to inherit the earth? The children of politicians, heads of state, wealthy corporate leaders, or dictators? Perhaps instead, it will be the reign of the small things, the meek, the unseeable. They have a longer history than any other living things on this planet and are surviving in the hot underwater springs of our oceans and underneath our fingernails. They adapt by increasing their numbers in the hopes that some will survive and in lifespans that are of no consequence to us. We fight them with medicines and remedies, sterilizations, pasteurizations, pesticides, and herbicides, trying to battle their ever increasing adaptation and claim to life. I believe that it is they that shall inherit the earth long after humans have failed in their attempts to control the planet.
These drawings then are my interpretations of new dioramas, the age of dinosaurs long gone, the age of humans long gone, the insects who ruled after us are long gone as well. Yes, it is the new age of survival, it is age of the meek.
